How to price a digital recipe fairly

A seller framework for setting sustainable prices based on testing, value, market fit, commission and licence.

01

Price the value, not only the page count

A short, thoroughly tested formula can be more valuable than a long but vague document. Consider the time a buyer saves, the cost of failed trials avoided, specialist knowledge, troubleshooting depth and the reliability of the result.

Commercial buyers may receive more economic value than home cooks, but a higher price should be matched by relevant information such as scalable quantities, production timing, yield and licence terms.

02

Know your costs

Digital delivery has low unit cost, but creation is not free. Testing ingredients, photography, editing, platform commission, taxes, refunds, advertising and customer support all affect sustainability. Estimate these before choosing a price.

  • Development and testing time
  • Ingredient and production-test cost
  • Photography, design and editing
  • Marketplace commission and payment adjustments
  • Promotion budget and expected conversion
  • Ongoing updates and buyer support
03

Compare the right alternatives

Compare recipes with similar depth, audience and licence rather than copying the most visible price. A basic home recipe, professional production formula and teaching licence are different products even when the finished dish has the same name.

Local purchasing power matters, but displayed currency conversion does not require a seller to create a different value proposition for every country. The final checkout amount and provider conversion remain authoritative.

04

Use plans and promotion carefully

A lower commission subscription can make sense when verified sales volume offsets the recurring fee. Calculate the break-even point instead of upgrading only because the plan appears more professional.

Promotion should have a defined budget and goal. Advertising cannot guarantee profit. Measure verified sales and net earnings, not only views, and stop a campaign that consistently attracts the wrong audience.

05

Review price with evidence

After enough genuine activity, review conversion, support questions, refunds and customer feedback. A price increase can be justified when the recipe improves or demand is strong. A lower price may help discovery, but repeated discounting can weaken trust if the original value was not credible.
